How to Treat Painful Erection
The erection painful and persistent, known scientifically as priapism is an emergency situation that may arise as a complication of the use of certain medications, or disorders of the blood, such as blood clots, sickle cell anemia or leukemia, for example.
Because this change can cause injuries on the penis, due to the excess blood, your treatment should be done as soon as possible in the hospital. For this, the treatments used include:
- Use of cold compresses: helps alleviate the swelling of the organ and decrease the amount of blood;
- Removal of the blood: it is done with local anesthesia, a doctor uses a needle to remove the excess of blood in the penis, thereby relieving the pain and the swelling;
- Injection of drugs alpha-agonists: make the veins more narrow, decreasing the amount of blood that reaches the penis.
In the most serious cases, in which it is not possible to resolve the problem with these techniques, the doctor may still advise a surgery to block the artery that takes the blood to the penis or to drain all the blood from the body.
Usually, the man is able to fully recover without getting any kind of sequel, however, it is important to go to the er as soon as possible to avoid the appearance of lesions.
How to identify
The symptoms may vary according to the type of priapism, and priapism ischemic, that is the most dangerous, causes:
- Erection that lasts more than 4 hours, and does not need to be related to sexual desire;
- The body of the penis very hard, but with the edge softened;
- The intense pain that may worsen with time.
Already in the case of priapism, non-ischemic symptoms are similar, but there is no pain. However, both situations present a risk of causing permanent damage to the penis can result in erectile dysfunction, it is recommended to go to the hospital when the erection takes more than 1 hour to disappear after the conclusion of the stimulus.
As it happens
The erection is a natural process that happens when there is a stimulus, physical or psychological, due to the increase of blood circulation to the penis, leading to size increase. Typically, the erection disappears a few minutes after sexual pleasure, or after the end of the stimulus, because the veins relax and blood leaves the penis, allowing that you decrease in size.
However, some diseases, such as sickle cell anemia, leukemia or other changes of the blood, may change the circulation in the intimate area, preventing erection disappears.
In addition, the use of drugs, knocks on the intimate area and the consumption of some medicines, such as antidepressants or anticoagulants, can also lead to this problem.
The blood that is trapped in the interior of the penis has a smaller amount of oxygen and, thus, emerging small injuries due to lack of oxygen. When the erection lasts too long, the injury will get even worse, and may lead to the emergence of erectile dysfunction.
