Techniques and Tricks Used in Drywall Construction

Learn about the advantages of building model and its main applications.

The works in Brazil gained a new concept with the arrival of drywall twenty years ago. The construction system, called dry wall, consists of profiles (guides and amounts), plasterboard, thermal and acoustic insulation (PET wool, rock or glass), and ribbons for treatment of joints, acoustic band for floor mass to lock and screws. They are screwed into a galvanized steel frame, forming a complete wall – replacing the masonry.

Many are the advantages of this model. It is an economical option, since it gives more speed to the work, as well as being clean and practical, because the plates are already marketed ready.

The drywall also allows construction without noise and has the benefits of being versatile, as it can be installed in any room, and also contributes to gain space as it is a thinner wall.

Walls made with drywall system require less physical effort than walls made in would target, because the material is lightweight and easy to handle.

The finish without any unevenness is another benefit of dry building model, in addition to soundproofing: a 10 cm thick wall has the same sound blocking performance of a masonry wall with 15 cm thick. The drywall sheets even meet the standards of the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards (ABNT) for insulation, impact and weight.

The model allows the installation of lighting systems, hydraulic and telephony in the internal structure of the house, but should not be used for structural functions.

Differences between white plate, green and pink

As the drywall sheets meet best performance in different areas, there are some versions of the system. The traditional white plate (general use) is indicated for dry areas such as living rooms, bedrooms and offices.

The green model should be installed in humid environments such as bathrooms, kitchens and service areas, which contain hydrophobic elements, a kind of waterproofing. The pink version has flame retardants in its formula and therefore their use is recommended for special areas, such as emergency exits.
